Before Herbs, Before Detox — Fix This First

Updated: Feb 23

The first step of healing is digestion.

“Show me your midsection, and I will tell you about your metabolic health” is one pretty way to look at this. But I'm going to say that your toilet habits will tell you even more. So will your skin, the whites of your eyes, your energy levels, your immunity, your hormonal health, and so on.

Ayurveda is honestly obsessed with digestion — not calories, not macros, not supplements — but Agni.

Before herbs. Before detox. Before rasāyana. First: fix digestion. Always.

I am thrilled to have put together a quick course covering the basics for you, and it is more affordable than you might think.

Digestive Mastery — From Ancient Wisdom to Modern Function

It is not a diet, a fad, a restriction plan, or a recipe book. It’s a set of basic yet forgotten principles that, in today’s culture, feel like lost common sense — buried under the noise of conflicting expert advice, yet capable of profound transformation. Easy to incorporate and follow at your own pace.

Why is awakening and optimising digestive intelligence so essential?

Because true health is not created by what we eat, but by how well we assimilate it.

Digestive optimisation is a process of gut alchemy — the conversion of food into energy, clarity, vitality, and resilient cellular function. When digestion functions intelligently, it becomes the foundation of immune strength, hormonal balance, mental clarity, and long-term health. In this sense, we are not merely what we eat, but what we are able to digest, absorb, and assimilate.

When digestive health is restored, the body often spontaneously resolves symptoms across multiple systems. Ayurveda is explicit on this point: digestion is step one of healing — not an optional add-on, but the starting line.

Ayurvedic digestive wisdom resonates deeply with me, not only as a practitioner, but through lived experience. I have navigated a long and often intense healing journey since childhood, including severe IBS that once required hospitalisation. In adulthood, Ayurveda helped me avoid serious digestive surgery — a turning point that reshaped my understanding of the body’s innate intelligence.

I have since witnessed the same transformation in patients who commit to these principles and allow the process to unfold. Discover the foundations of digestive health through Ayurvedic wisdom. This program offers practical, everyday tips to optimise digestion, boost immunity, and support overall well-being. Benefit from a nuanced, no-nonsense approach that will help you navigate the sea of crazy and contradictory health advice out there.

This course is not a meal plan, a recipe book, or a diet. Ayurveda states that what agrees with a person’s digestion is highly individual (for example, some tolerate spicy food very well, while others can eat a lot without putting on weight). For an optimised meal plan tailored to you, I would need to see you for a consultation.

The course offers universal advice that can benefit everyone. Learn how meal timing, food choices, and mindful eating can transform your health — at your own pace.

To end this newsletter beautifully, I would like to share the core sutras (original Sanskrit, pronunciation, and practical meaning) from the classical texts that explicitly state that all healing begins with optimising digestion.

अग्निर्हि देहस्य मूलम् ।

अग्निर्दीप्ते बलं वर्णः सुखमायुश्च वर्धते ।

अग्नौ नष्टे नष्टं सर्वं मृत्युरेव न संशयः ॥

agnir hi dehasya mūlam

agnir dīpte balaṃ varṇaḥ sukham āyuś ca vardhate

agnau naṣṭe naṣṭaṃ sarvaṃ mṛtyur eva na saṃśayaḥ

Agni is the root of the body.

When strong, strength, complexion, happiness, and longevity increase.

When lost, all is lost — death follows without doubt.

— Charaka Samhita, Cikitsāsthāna 15.4

रोगाः सर्वेऽपि मन्देऽग्नौ स्वस्थाः सर्वेऽग्निदीप्तितः ।

rogāḥ sarve'pi mande'gnau svasthāḥ sarve'gnidīptitaḥ

All diseases arise when Agni is weak.

All health exists when Agni is strong.

— Ashtanga Hridayam, Sūtrasthāna 12.1

आहारसम्भवो देहः ।

āhāra-sambhavo dehaḥ

The body is formed from food.

— Charaka Samhita, Sūtrasthāna 27

आमं हि सर्वरोगाणां कारणम् ।

āmaṃ hi sarva-rogāṇāṃ kāraṇam

Āma is the cause of all diseases.

— Ashtanga Hridayam, Sūtrasthāna 13

रसाद् रुधिरं ततः मांसं ततः मेदः ततः अस्थि ततः मज्जा ततः शुक्रम् ।

rasād rudhiraṃ tataḥ māṃsaṃ tataḥ medaḥ tataḥ asthi tataḥ majjā tataḥ śukram

From rasa arises blood; from blood muscle; from muscle fat; from fat bone; from bone marrow; from marrow reproductive tissue.

— Sushruta Samhita, Sūtrasthāna 14

Healing is not about chasing fixes. It’s about understanding your body, your patterns, your digestion, your rhythms—and learning how to work with them, not against them.

If something you’ve read here resonated, it’s not by accident.

You’re welcome to get to know my work more closely—explore my programs, designed as accessible, practical gateways into Ayurvedic healing —or take the next step and book a one-to-one Ayurvedic consultation to look at your unique constitution, symptoms, and goals in depth.

If you’re not sure where to begin, I also offer a complimentary discovery call—a space to ask questions, clarify direction, and see whether working together feels aligned.

You’ll find all booking options under Book Online, and my educational programs in the Programs section of the website.

Your body already holds the intelligence for healing. Sometimes, it just needs the right conversation to begin.
